//Max Lee’s Galaxy Dreamer is an impressive, unsettling piece, a moving meditation on the yawning gap between rich and poor in one of the world’s most extraordinary cities.
Lee's choreography is tight as a drum//
4 Stars Review from The Advertiser!!!!!
How much does it cost for human values? Underneath the glittering façade of the global financial centre with highest housing cost in the world, are we still able to find a place called “Home”? Inspired by a street sleeper found in Shamshuipo, a slum area in Hong Kong, the Galaxy Dreamer assesses the predicament of contemporary Hong Kong, a city where many Australians or their neighbours spending years of work or vacation.
“We want to bring the audience into the inner worlds of two figures; one is forsaken by the materialistic city and the other tries hard to fit into the ridiculous world,” said Max Lee, the choreographer. “Having an adequate living space is a human right. Yet, the housing market in Hong Kong is totally manipulated by the government and the developers. Hong Kong’s average price for a home is more expensive than a flat adjacent to Sydney Harbour. What makes thing worse is, buying your own flat is the only benchmark of success in Hong Kong, and otherwise you would be named as ‘rubbish’. Thus, I create a galaxy dreamer who pursues the values that money cannot buy. Yet, can we be the galaxy dreamer in the ever depressing reality?”
The show will be performed by Kenny Leung, an emerging dancer who has received training in contemporary dance and Chinese dance, and Chan Wing-yip, winners of hip hop dance competitions.
